Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – Christ the King Sunday 2016

As we consider the lessons for Christ the King, we bump into a Canticle in lieu of a Psalm.  Zechariah’s song encourages to be thankful for God’s blessings in advance of our receiving them, as well as how to be more watchful for the tastes of Christ’s goodness all around us, even before he returns to consummate his reign on earth as it is in heaven.

Fr. Lenny’s & Bp. Dorsey’s Sermon Redux – Proper 25 – 2016

At St Bartholomew’s, my second parish, we celebrated Fr Charlie Martin’s 20 years of service while Bp Dorsey McConnell was there to visit.  At St Francis we enjoyed a typical Sunday service.  But we both, once again, focused on Luke’s Gospel where Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector who prayed in the temple.  Either way, we all need divine forgiveness, as well as a genuinely penitent heart to seek it out.

Prayer is still on the table, as Jesus only gets thanked 10% of the time.  Faithful, humble prayer can heal us inside and out, but if we don’t show gratitude, just what kind of recipient of God’s good gifts are we?

In serving two church’s, when the bishop is at one church, you still need to preach at the other.  This provides a neat chance to compare and contrast how two different people approach the same Gospel lesson.  The good thing to note, we both agree on the necessity of a vibrant faith and a deep sense of humility in following Jesus.

“I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind,” Snoop Dogg once rapped.  Jesus continues exhorting us about our finances, encouraging us to use what we have to help the less fortunate in his famous parable about Lazarus and the Rich Man.

Money, money, money!  Jesus has a lot to say about it, especially today in his parable of the shrewd steward.  What can we learn about financial faithfulness to God from a shady character like him?  Find out.

Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – St Bartholomew’s Feast & Proper 17 – 2016

Another two-for-one.  Probably just as well since I’ll be on vacation next week.  Having been asked by the diocese to supply services for St Bartholomew’s – Scottdale on Saturday evenings, it was fortuitous to start close enough to that apostle’s feast day to recognize it.  Then regular Sunday service at St Francis, we forged ahead with St Luke’s Gospel, where we see Jesus making the link between humility and how we treat those we are tempted to think of as “below” us.  May we all be willing both to bear our cross, and to walk the way of humility expressed through love for all (not just the people we consider worthy of it).
