Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – Christmas Eve – 2016

The lectionary helps us rejoice in the words of Psalm 96 on this holy night.  On this Christmas Eve, make room for  King Jesus in the inn of your heart, as he makes room for us in eternity.

Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – Ecumenical Advent Service -2016

Our local ecumenical ministerium in Somerset holds weekly services on Wednesdays at noon during the seasons of Advent and Lent, and I was at bat today.  Using the Gospel lesson from Sunday, we looked at the life of Joseph and how we might know God’s will (hint: the Great Commandment).

Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – Third Sunday in Advent – 2016

This week the lectionary has us rejoicing in the words of Psalm 146 (beginning with 4 in the Book of Common Prayer).  In it we find a God whose creative actions, dependable character, compassion for the poor and outcast, intolerance for wicked ways, and boundless reign make him worthy of all the praise we can give!  So rejoice this Gaudete Sunday!  Again, I say, rejoice!

Fr. Lenny’s Sermons -Second Sunday in Advent – 2016

This Second Week in Advent, what do you expect from those who govern you?  In Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19, the Psalmist is looking for someone who seems to be fully human and fully divine.  I only know one King who fits that description. Don’t settle for second best!

Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – First Sunday in Advent – 2016

As we start Advent, Psalm 122 is placed within our readings, to encourage to gather, to do so joyfully, and to seek the good of those in God’s household both in prayer and action.  May we ready our hearts for our Coming King!

Fr. Lenny’s Sermon – Eve of Thanksgiving – 2016

Among the lessons for Thanksgiving, I am grateful for Psalm 100 and how it reminds me of the faithful God worthy of thanks and praise.  I am also thankful for serving a church that still upholds the tradition of worshiping to better prepare our hearts for the joy and feasting we’ll share tomorrow.

Fr. Lenny’s & Bp. Dorsey’s Sermon Redux – Proper 25 – 2016

At St Bartholomew’s, my second parish, we celebrated Fr Charlie Martin’s 20 years of service while Bp Dorsey McConnell was there to visit.  At St Francis we enjoyed a typical Sunday service.  But we both, once again, focused on Luke’s Gospel where Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector who prayed in the temple.  Either way, we all need divine forgiveness, as well as a genuinely penitent heart to seek it out.

Prayer is still on the table, as Jesus only gets thanked 10% of the time.  Faithful, humble prayer can heal us inside and out, but if we don’t show gratitude, just what kind of recipient of God’s good gifts are we?

In serving two church’s, when the bishop is at one church, you still need to preach at the other.  This provides a neat chance to compare and contrast how two different people approach the same Gospel lesson.  The good thing to note, we both agree on the necessity of a vibrant faith and a deep sense of humility in following Jesus.
